Hackers turned supermarket refrigerators into ovens in France, sending temperatures soaring to 50°C and reportedly as high as 80°C at one store, destroying fresh and frozen food in a major cyberattack. Hundreds of French supermarkets were affected as hackers targeted digitally connected refrigeration systems, triggering fires, food losses and widespread disruption. French retail group Les Mousquetaires confirmed that around 150 Intermarché stores were hit, with refrigerators reaching 50°C for six hours. At an Intermarché store in La Haye, the director reported temperatures of 80°C, causing products to melt and forcing the disposal of fresh and frozen inventory. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has ordered a cybersecurity investigation, while authorities are coordinating with European counterparts over potential wider threats. How did hackers manipulate supermarket refrigeration systems? Could similar cyberattacks threaten businesses worldwide?
