A decision to rename Kolkata's historic Suhrawardy Avenue as Gopal Mukherjee Road has ignited a fierce political and historical controversy in West Bengal. The BJP says the move corrects a historical wrong, arguing that Bengal should not honour Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, who has long been associated with the 1946 Great Calcutta Killings. The party instead wants recognition for Gopal Mukherjee, popularly known as Gopal Patha, whom it credits with protecting Hindus during the pre-Partition riots. However, the Trinamool Congress and the Congress have strongly disputed the BJP's claim, insisting that the road was originally named after Sir Hassan Suhrawardy, a distinguished physician, educationist and former Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University—not the former Bengal Premier. Is this a correction of history or a case of mistaken identity driven by politics? Watch the full report for all the details.
