Vijay Delivers TVK Poll Promise! 1-Gram Gold Rings For Newborns Under New Scheme

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has launched the Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, or Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme, in Madurai, delivering a key TVK poll promise. Under the scheme, eligible babies born in government hospitals on or after June 22, 2026 will receive a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring with a unique serial number and tamper-proof packaging. Vijay handed over the rings to mothers, held and cuddled newborns and interacted with families at Rajaji Government Hospital. The Tamil Nadu government says the scheme aims to honour motherhood, promote women’s health and encourage institutional births, while the Opposition has criticised it as a publicity exercise. The state has prepared 1.28 lakh rings for the first phase, with an annual allocation of more than ₹755 crore.
