Let us consider Sanya, a 32-year-old investor who is sitting across from her financial adviser after a difficult year for the markets. She points to a company she once followed closely. The business has had a rough run, its share price has fallen and almost everyone in her circle has stopped talking about it.

Sanya’s instinct is understandable: if everyone is moving away, why look at it now? That is when her advisor provides an unexpected point of view - the strategy of contrarian investing.

A contrarian investor would pause before reaching the conclusion that Sanya’s acquaintances reached. Her advisor pointed out that the more useful question is whether the business has actually become weaker, or whether investor sentiment has moved faster than the underlying fundamentals.

Looking beyond the obvious

This is where contrarian investing differs from simply buying stocks after a fall.

A lower price does not automatically make an investment attractive. A company can lose value because its business model is under pressure, its balance sheet has weakened or its industry is facing a permanent disruption. In such cases, waiting for a recovery may not be enough.

The contrarian approach instead involves examining what is happening underneath the market narrative. Is the weakness temporary? Has the business retained its competitive strengths? Could earnings recover as the business cycle turns? Has the market already priced in most of the bad news?

Valuations, business-cycle conditions, market triggers and investor sentiment can all form part of this assessment.

Why should you consider a contra fund?

For an investor like Sanya, doing this analysis independently across several companies can be demanding. This is where a contra fund can offer a different route into the strategy.

A contra fund is a mutual fund that follows a contrarian investment strategy. Instead of simply buying what is performing well or what is attracting the most attention, the investment process looks for opportunities where market perception and underlying fundamentals may not fully align.

The fund manager and investment team conduct the research, assess individual businesses and construct a portfolio of such opportunities. This means an investor can participate in a collection of contrarian ideas rather than having to identify and track every opportunity independently.

It also introduces an important element of diversification. A contrarian opportunity may emerge in one sector because of a cyclical downturn, while another may become attractive because sentiment has weakened despite improving business prospects. A portfolio can bring together these different situations.

The conviction to wait

There is one quality a contrarian investor cannot avoid - patience - and that is something many people lack.

The market may take time to recognise an improvement in fundamentals. Some ideas may work relatively quickly; others may require a longer period for the original thesis to play out. That makes a contra fund better understood through its investment philosophy, portfolio and risk characteristics rather than simply its recent performance.

The underlying idea is quite human, really. When everyone around you has reached the same conclusion, it takes more than courage to question it. It takes evidence.

For mutual fund investors, a contra fund provides a professionally managed way to pursue that process: looking beyond what is currently popular, examining what may have been overlooked and allowing a portfolio of contrarian ideas to evolve over time.
