After Miss World 2017 Manushi Chillar's response, Shashi Tharoor apologises and calls her 'uncommonly gracious'

What was meant to be a witty remark on Manushi Chillar's crowning backfired in the worst possible way. After the pageant winner from Haryana was crowned the new Miss World, Shashi Tharoor tweeted a joke. "BJP should have realised that Indian cash dominates the globe: look, even our Chhillar has become Miss World!" quipped the otherwise extraordinarily eloquent MP.

Twitter users did not let this one go and were up in arms against Shashi Tharoor, who usually enjoys unparalleled support and popularity on the micro-blogging site. Twitterati called Shashi Tharoor elitist and questioned his feminism; they also asked how he could stoop so low and commented that he is broad minded when he is abroad and very narrow-minded when he is in India.

 

Even the National Commission of Women (NCW) condemned the tweet and asked if Tharoor would call his own daughter chillar.

The NCW followed it up with another tweet saying that they will summon the MP for his derogatory comments on Manushi Chillar.

Vineet Jain, MD of Times of India Group tried to diffuse the situation and tweeted:

Manushi Chillar replied to Jain's tweet and clarified that she was not offended.

Like what she said - there's chill in Chillar after all. Shashi Tharoor replied to her tweet, apologised again and called her 'uncommonly gracious'.

Manushi Chillar is perhaps, uncommonly gracious, unlike our Twitterati, who decided to pick the fight for the newly-crowned Miss World, instead of letting her speak her mind first.
