Mahindra has entered India's CNG passenger vehicle market with the launch of the XUV 3XO ZNG, its first CNG-powered SUV. Starting at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the new model promises to combine the driving experience of a turbocharged SUV with the fuel savings of CNG. Buyers can choose from four variants, with prices going up to Rs 12.27 lakh for the top-end REVX A.

Who says CNG vehicles have to compromise on performance? The XUV 3XO ZNG gets a 1.2-litre mStallion TCMPFi turbocharged engine producing 82 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque in both petrol and CNG modes. Mahindra claims this is the highest torque output among CNG passenger vehicles in India. The SUV can reportedly accelerate from 0 to 60 kmph in just 4.9 seconds.

Mileage promise

The XUV 3XO ZNG promises a claimed fuel efficiency of 24.7 km/kg, making running costs a major part of its appeal. Mahindra has equipped the SUV with what it describes as a segment-first 10-bar CNG injection pressure system. If the CNG runs out, the vehicle automatically switches to petrol mode, allowing drivers to continue their journey without manually changing fuel settings.

Boot breakthrough

CNG buyers often worry about losing luggage space to bulky gas cylinders, but Mahindra has taken a different approach. The XUV 3XO ZNG uses an underfloor twin-cylinder arrangement that keeps the cylinders beneath the luggage area. This creates a flat loading floor and leaves 270 litres of boot space. The spare wheel has also been positioned underneath the vehicle's body to free up additional room.

Mahindra is positioning its first CNG SUV as a feature-rich family vehicle. The XUV 3XO ZNG comes with six airbags, electronic stability control, ISOFIX mounts and more than 35 standard safety features. A gas-leak detection system automatically switches the vehicle to petrol mode if a leak is detected. Premium equipment includes two 26.03 cm screens, a Skyroof, Dolby Atmos audio, black leatherette seats and black alloy wheels.
