Builder and politician Baba Siddique, who was shot dead on October 12, began his career as a corporator from Bandra, Mumbai in 1995. Four years later, as a Congress candidate, he was elected as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for the first time. In a political career spanning three decades, Siddique rose to the position of a Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies and Labour in the Maharashtra government. It was, however, his rise as a real estate mogul in Mumbai which propelled him to new heights. His property developments had their foundation in the slums of Bandra, Khar and Santacruz and Siddique partnered several developers to ride the wave of slum rehabilitation in Mumbai. His real estate projects were scattered across Bandra and while his exact financials are available only from his 2019 poll affidavit, reports suggest his financial influence spread much beyond national borders.
