Delhi faces a new worry as uranium is detected in groundwater, adding to toxic air and polluted rivers. The Central Ground Water Board’s 2025 report ranks Delhi third nationally for uranium contamination in 2024, with many areas crossing the BIS limit of 30 ppb. Experts link this to over-extraction of groundwater. High-risk zones include North Delhi, Narela, Kanjhawala and South-West Delhi. Uranium is nephrotoxic and can harm kidneys. Experts recommend RO filtration and regular water testing.
