12 Years Of Make In India: How India’s Defence Industry Went From ₹43K Cr To ₹1.78 Lakh Cr

What has 12 years of Make in India changed for India’s defence industry? The numbers show a major expansion in domestic production. India’s defence production rose from ₹43,746 crore in 2013-14 to a record ₹1.78 lakh crore in 2025-26, nearly four times higher. Defence exports have also surged from ₹686 crore to ₹38,424 crore over the same period, with Indian defence products now reaching more than 80 countries. The transformation extends across aircraft, warships, missiles, artillery, helicopters and armoured platforms, with systems such as Tejas, INS Vikrant, Akash, Pinaka, Astra, ATAGS, Arjun and Prachand forming part of India’s indigenous defence portfolio. But major gaps remain. India continues to depend on foreign sources for some critical technologies, including certain engines, propulsion systems, sensors and electronics, and remains one of the world's major importers of arms.
