Air pollution may pose a risk beyond the lungs, with growing research linking long-term exposure to cognitive decline and dementia. More than 57 million people worldwide live with dementia, while India is facing a growing burden among its ageing population. Health experts explain that tiny pollutant particles can trigger inflammation and affect blood vessels and brain health over time. However, exposure to polluted air does not mean everyone will develop dementia, as age, genetics, blood pressure, diabetes and lifestyle also play a role. The WHO has identified 20 modifiable risk factors, highlighting how healthier lifestyles and preventive care may help reduce or delay dementia risk.
