Exclusive Group Report | Nathu La Reopens After 6 Years India China Border Trade Resumes In Sikkim

India and China have resumed border trade through Sikkim’s Nathu La Pass after a six-year suspension that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. The historic trade route reopened with a special ceremony attended by Sikkim government representatives and other officials. Around 35 categories of goods are currently permitted for cross-border trade, including handicrafts, handloom products, traditional religious items and ready-made garments. This year, 38 registered traders have received passes to participate in the trade. The Sikkim government has also asked the Directorate General of Foreign Trade to expand the list of approved items. Officials expect the reopening to support local businesses, create livelihood opportunities, strengthen economic activity and give tourism in the region a fresh boost. Trade through the high-altitude pass will operate from Monday to Thursday and continue until November under existing regulations.
