A village in Maharashtra’s Solapur district has announced itself ‘up for sale’ in a desperate protest over its water crisis. Residents of Tulshi village say they want any wealthy industrialist to adopt or buy the village and, in return, provide them access to water. The village was eventually included in the Sina-Madha Lift Irrigation Scheme, which draws water from Ujani Dam, but villagers say water has still not reached them. With the region facing a severe water shortage, residents are dependent on tankers for drinking water and farming. Villagers say the crisis is affecting livelihoods and even marriages, prompting this unusual protest for attention.
