Two days, multiple protest locations and repeated confrontations with Delhi Police — Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained again on Wednesday, after an INDIA bloc lunch meeting unexpectedly turned into a protest march towards Jantar Mantar. The leaders were later released. The latest protest came a day after the Opposition’s march towards the Election Commission was stopped by police barricades. Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi then made their way into the Akashvani Bhavan premises and staged a prolonged sit-in, leading to their detention after hours of standoff. But these sudden moves are not entirely new. In July, Rahul Gandhi and Opposition leaders shifted from a planned meeting at Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence to a surprise protest near the Prime Minister’s residence. In August, Gandhi walked into Parliament Street Police Station with student Sahil Lochab over an FIR demand and later staged a sit-in when the complaint was not immediately registered. From 7 Lok Kalyan Marg to a police station, Akashwani Bhavan and now Jantar Mantar, the locations and triggers have changed — but the element of surprise has remained a recurring feature of the Opposition’s protest strategy.
