Railways To Quadruple 11,000 Km Of High-Density Corridors: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Indian Railways is mounting a massive capacity expansion across its busiest routes. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw says seven high-density corridors spanning around 11,000 km are being targeted for quadrupling, covering routes including Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Kolkata, Delhi-Chennai and Mumbai-Kolkata’s key diagonal links. These corridors carry around 40% of Indian Railways’ traffic. Vaishnaw says around 2,000 km has already been four-lined, another 5,000 km has been sanctioned or is under execution, while around 4,000 km is progressing through the DPR and approval process. A key focus is the Mumbai-Kolkata corridor, where additional lines are aimed at easing severe congestion, improving capacity and enabling more trains.
