Immigration update: India to scrap boarding pass stamping for international flyers starting Sept 1 

In a major push to modernize airport operations and clear bottlenecks at departure terminals, India will stop stamping physical boarding passes at immigration counters for international travelers starting September 1.

An internal directive issued by an official at the Delhi Foreigners Regional Registration Office, instructed international airport operators, airlines, and security personnel to phase out the age-old practice across all international departure points nationwide.

Under the revised directive, departing international passengers can present digital boarding passes on their smartphones directly to immigration officials. While passengers who prefer physical paper boarding passes can still carry them, immigration officers will no longer apply rubber ink stamps to them.

The policy overhaul follows an internal review by the Bureau of Immigration (BOI), under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The review concluded that physical stamping created unnecessary friction, slowed passenger movement through immigration queues, and frequently led to errors.

"The matter has been examined by the BOI and it has now been decided to do away with the mandatory requirement of physical boarding passes and the stamping of boarding passes at immigration counters at all international airports in the country," an official stated.

Authorities also noted that "improper or incorrect" physical ink stamps routinely smeared or obscured critical barcodes, creating reading errors at final boarding gates.

The move brings immigration protocols in line with security procedures already in place across Indian aviation. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) ended its practice of stamping physical boarding passes during security check points several years ago.

Airport authorities and international air carriers are now updating operational briefs to ensure check-in ground staff and border clearance agents are fully transitioned ahead of the September 1 rollout.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Home Affairs is conducting a separate pilot project aimed at eventually eliminating physical entry and exit passport stamps for Indian passport holders to further automate border clearances.
