PM Modi speaks to Trump amid India-US trade talks, reviews ties across trade, defence, energy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to US President Donald Trump on Wednesday. Both leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, energy, and critical technologies as India and the United States continue negotiations on a trade deal.

"Had a productive conversation with President Trump," Modi said in a post on X. "We reviewed our bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas."

The two leaders also discussed regional and international issues, including efforts to advance global peace and security, Modi said. "We agreed to maintain close engagement to take our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership forward," he said.

India-US Trade Deal Talks

The call comes after the two leaders met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, on June 17.

At that meeting, Modi and Trump had noted "significant progress" in negotiations towards an interim Bilateral Trade Agreement and asked their officials to work towards a "balanced, mutually beneficial, and commercially meaningful agreement at the earliest."

The two leaders had also reviewed progress under the India-US COMPACT framework, covering defence, strategic technologies, energy, and bilateral trade.
