The COVID-19 pandemic could be stopped if at least 70 per cent of the public wear masks consistently, shows recent research published in the journal Physics of Fluids.
The effectiveness of this precaution, however, depends on the type of material used for masks and duration for which they are worn. Here is all that you need to know.

Surgical masks highly efficacious

As per the study, highly efficacious masks, such as surgical masks, with an estimated efficacy of around 70 per cent, could lead to the eradication of the pandemic if at least 70 per cent of the public wears masks consistently.

Cloth masks work too

Even the less efficient cloth masks could help slow the virus transmission if wore consistently.

N95 mask for aerosol-sized droplets

Scientists also included that the efficacy of the face masks also depends on the size of fluid droplets expelled from the nose and mouth when a person talks, sings, coughs, sneezes or simply breathes.
Among all the other masks, N95 masks are highly efficient to filter out aerosol-sized droplets.

Further study needed

"There could be some relation between breathing resistance and the flow resistance of the face mask which needs to be studied for a face mask-wearing interval", said Heow Pueh Lee, co-author of the study.
