Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, the youthful romantic entertainer from the Karan Johar camp, had a fantastic start at the domestic box office, collecting an impressive Rs 62.11 crore in its opening weekend.
The movie, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, released on May 31 and was made on a budget of around Rs 40 crore.
On its opening day, Ayan Mukerji directed
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani earned Rs 19.45 crore. It earned Rs 20.16 crore and Rs 22.5 crore on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
This is the biggest opening for any Bollywood film this year and eclipses by a substantial margin the three-day collections of
Race 2 (Rs 51.35 crore),
Shootout at Wadala (Rs 32.1 crore) and
Himmatwala (Rs 31 crore) - the other commercial biggies released so far this year.
The movie had a superb run on Monday too, collecting about Rs 11-12 crore* and emerging among the top grossers at the box office on non-holiday first Monday after release.
Trade pundits are well seeing
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani to race to the
Rs 100-crore club within the first week, a first for any film without help from a public holiday.
The film has also done good business overseas, managing to get into
the US top 10 box-office charts for the week at the eighth spot.
Officials at UTV are happy that the Rs 50-crore film, which released in over 3,000 screens in the country, has "taken the box office by storm".
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the film "has fared exceptionally well at multiplexes and was very good at single screens too."
