- The iOS 14.4 update fixes vulnerabilities that Apple says "may have been actively exploited."
- Apple will release more details about the vulnerabilities later.
- The iOS 14.4 update is about 400MB in size.
Apple late on Tuesday released the iOS 14.4 and watchOS 7.3 updates to the general public. These updates were under beta testing with developers for weeks ahead of release. The Cupertino-based giant confirmed the new updates in a release earlier in the day where it announced the availability of all-new Apple Watch Black Unity Collection.
The company said that the new Unity watch face would be available later today as part of watchOS 7.3, and will require iPhone 6s or later running iOS 14.4.
Coming back to the new update, the iOS 14.4 is a small update and is about 400MB in size. However, the update size could vary depending on the iPhone model. Similarly, watchOS 7.3 is about 160MB in size. Talking about the compatibility, the iOS 14.4 update is available for iPhone 6s and later and iPod touch (7th generation). The new watchOS update, on the other hand, is available for Apple Watch Series 3 and later models.
The iOS 14.4 update fixes three vulnerabilities which are said to be under attacks by hackers. The company said in its support page, "A malicious application may be able to elevate privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited." Other bugs were reported in WebKit, the browser engine behind Safari, and Apple says that the new update addressed a logic issue with improved restrictions.
This is not the first time Apple has admitted about a security bug, and it's something that Apple users expect from the company and has gained trust over the years. The company has added that it would provide "additional details" soon.
