Canada Gets EU ‘Associate Member’ Offer As Carney Seeks Deeper Ties Beyond U.S.

Canada could be heading towards an unprecedented relationship with the European Union after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed creating an “associate membership” status for Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney, who was present during her State of the Union address, has been pushing for deeper ties with Europe amid heightened trade tensions with the United States. The proposed status would fall short of full EU membership, with its exact terms still to be negotiated. Canada and the EU are already expanding cooperation in defence, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals and investment. However, the proposal would require further agreement and legal consideration within the bloc.
