The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has proposed a major overhaul of the EPF contribution framework. Under the new structure, PF contributions above ₹1,800 per month will become voluntary, while mandatory contributions will apply only to wages up to the statutory ceiling of ₹15,000. Employees will have the flexibility to decide how much additional salary they want to contribute towards retirement savings. Employers can also choose whether to match these voluntary contributions. The proposed changes aim to simplify EPF compliance, make salary structuring more flexible, reduce administrative complexity, and streamline withdrawal rules for nearly eight crore active EPF members.
