Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs on imported steel are at the centre of a massive new U.S. steel investment by India’s Essar Group. Through Mesabi Metallics, Essar plans to invest $15 billion in a new Iowa steel complex, as part of an approximately $18 billion integrated US mine-to-mill operation linking an iron ore mine in Minnesota to the Iowa plant. Trump and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick have argued that the tariffs helped make the project economically viable. Mesabi’s planned first phase targets 7.5 million tons of annual steel production, potentially rising to 10 million tons, with production targeted around 2030. The project is expected to create at least 1,750 permanent jobs and thousands of construction jobs. But the big question is execution. Essar’s earlier Minnesota steel project went through bankruptcy, while the new Iowa complex is still a future project.
