India’s first hydrogen train begins a new era of green rail travel. Running from Jind to Sonipat, the zero-emission train brings powerful technology and cleaner mobility.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered train from Jind in Haryana on July 17. The clean-energy train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat section, marking a major milestone for Indian Railways and the country’s green mobility mission. Powered by hydrogen fuel cells, the train generates electricity onboard and releases water vapour instead of diesel exhaust during operation. A dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has been established at Jind with the required safety clearance. The project supports India’s net-zero ambitions and places the country among nations testing hydrogen technology for cleaner rail transportation at scale globally.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said strong infrastructure is not merely a factor in development but a defining mark of a civilisation. He argued that roads, bridges, railways, airports and digital networks connect citizens while shaping how future generations remember a nation. Singh acknowledged that infrastructure work continued after Independence but said investment did not match India’s capabilities or requirements. Highlighting the transformation of the past decade, he said the government has focused on connecting villages, cities, mountains and remote regions through multiple modes of transport and digital connectivity. He added that stronger infrastructure builds public confidence and secures India’s future.
Indian Railways has unveiled the beta version of its redesigned IRCTC website, promising a faster and more user-friendly train ticket booking experience. The new portal features a cleaner interface, fewer pop-ups and CAPTCHAs, reduced booking steps, and a smarter seat availability view across all travel classes. It will also allow passengers to save traveller details, making repeat bookings quicker. The beta is currently being integrated with the Passenger Reservation System (PRS), which powers railway reservations across India. Railway officials have already demonstrated the new platform to students and collected feedback before the wider rollout. The fully integrated website is expected to be launched over the next few months.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind railway station in Haryana on July 17. The indigenous 10-coach train will operate between Jind and Sonipat, marking a major milestone in Indian Railways’ clean-mobility journey. Powered by hydrogen fuel cells, it generates electricity onboard and releases only water vapour during operation, resulting in zero carbon emissions. Its 3,200-horsepower propulsion system makes it one of the world’s most powerful hydrogen trainsets. The project also places India among a select group of countries operating hydrogen trains while reducing fossil-fuel dependence, tailpipe pollution and operational noise across Indian Railways.
Blue ICF coaches mean express trains, red LHB means safer and faster, white Vande Bharat means premium travel. Here's what Indian train colours actually tell you about your journey.
IRCTC's new website launched July 15 with 1.5 lakh bookings per minute, fare calendar, seat preference, multi-language support and a cleaner interface for faster Tatkal booking.

Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a major reform in fertilizer transportation by Indian Railways. Fertilizer bags will now be moved in steel containers instead of closed box wagons. Containers can be unloaded separately at multiple railway points, helping fertilizers reach farmers faster while allowing trains to continue their journey. The reform will also replace nearly 50 complex freight slabs with a simple per-tonne, per-kilometre pricing system. Weather-resistant containers will protect fertilizer from rain, simplify handling and provide safe storage. The move is expected to improve rake availability, reduce delays and strengthen fertilizer distribution across India.
PM Modi will flag off India's second Sleeper Vande Bharat — the Sant Ravidas Express — on July 17 between Varanasi and Chheharta (Amritsar). Here's the full route, timetable and stops.
