20 Indian satellites at risk: Why space above Earth is becoming a danger zone

Orbital Danger

India’s satellites are facing a growing threat above Earth as space becomes increasingly crowded. Of the 22 active Indian satellites in low Earth orbit, 20 are considered at higher collision risk due to the rising number of objects and debris moving around the planet.

Space Dodge

Avoiding a crash in space is no longer a rare event. ISRO has already carried out nine collision avoidance manoeuvres in 2026, showing how satellite operators are constantly adjusting orbits to protect valuable spacecraft from dangerous encounters.

Debris Storm

Thousands of objects orbiting Earth have turned space into a busy highway where even tiny fragments can become dangerous. Low Earth orbit satellites face greater risks because this region has a much denser population of space debris and other objects.

Zero Debris

India is preparing for a cleaner future beyond Earth with its Debris Free Space Mission initiative. ISRO aims to achieve zero space debris contribution from Indian government and private players, marking a major push towards sustainable space operations.

Global Shield

India is not fighting the space debris challenge alone. Through global platforms like the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee and UN working groups, ISRO is contributing research and guidelines to make future space missions safer.
