Maruti board okays purchase of land in Gujarat's Mehsana district

The Board of Directors at India's leading car maker Maruti Suzuki has granted approval to purchase land in Mehsana district in Gujarat, for future expansion of manufacturing facilities.

Earlier this year, the car maker had decided to set up a facility in Gujarat. The purchase would be subject to final negotiations on price and all legal formalities being completed.

This would be Maruti's third plant. The other two are in Gurgaon and Manesar in Haryana which have been rocked by workers' strikes in recent months.

The strikes had badly hit Maruti Suzuki's production in the run up to the festive season. The strikes forced the company to stop production in the Gurgaon plant for a few days.

Maruti has become the latest car maker to head for Gujarat to set up a plant.
