We’ve all done it — sat on the toilet, phone in hand, scrolling through social media or watching a quick video. It seems harmless… but what if this everyday habit is actually hurting your health? A recent study published in PLOS ONE found that adults who use their phones while on the toilet have a 46% higher risk of developing hemorrhoids compared to those who don’t. Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center surveyed 125 adults and discovered that 66% admitted to using smartphones in the bathroom, often sitting for more than five minutes per visit — a major risk factor for hemorrhoids. Surprisingly, it’s not constipation or straining causing the issue, but simply how long you’re sitting. The immersive nature of social media and videos makes time slip away, leading to extended pressure on anal veins. But that’s not all — your phone could be carrying up to 17,000 bacterial gene copies, making it dirtier than a toilet seat. So not only are you putting your health at risk physically, but also exposing yourself to harmful germs.

In this video, we’ll break down the research, the risks, and most importantly, how to protect your health. Small habit, big consequences — it’s time to rethink your toilet routine.
