At the Global Fintech Fest 2026, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari outlined India’s vision for intelligent and digitally connected highways. Gadkari said the highway of the future will be more than a physical road, with digital technology making systems transparent, efficient, time-bound and corruption-free. Highlighting FASTag as a major success story, he said FASTag penetration at National Highway toll plazas has crossed 98%, with over 13 crore FASTags issued. Gadkari said technology has already helped boost toll revenue significantly and expects number plate-based tolling to deliver further gains. He also called for digital solutions to curb overloading and leakages on highways.
