A taxi ride to visit a sick mathematician produced one of the most famous anecdotes in the history of mathematics. The number on the cab was 1729 — a figure British mathematician GH Hardy initially considered unremarkable. Srinivasa Ramanujan saw something entirely different.

When Hardy visited Ramanujan during his illness, he reportedly mentioned that the taxi number, 1729, seemed rather dull. Ramanujan immediately disagreed. The number, he pointed out, had a remarkable property: it was the smallest positive integer that could be expressed as the sum of two positive cubes in two different ways.

The mathematics behind his observation is strikingly simple: 1729 = 1³ + 12³ and 1729 = 9³ + 10³  

In other words, 1729 can be reached through two completely different pairs of cubes. No smaller positive integer has that property. That is why it became known as the Hardy-Ramanujan number and, more famously, the first non-trivial taxicab number.

More than a clever number trick  

The story is often remembered as evidence of Ramanujan's extraordinary numerical intuition. But 1729 became more than a charming anecdote.

A taxicab number is defined as the smallest number that can be represented as the sum of two positive cubes in a specified number of distinct ways. Thus, 1729 is commonly written as Ta(2) — the second taxicab number under the standard definition, after the trivial case 2 = 1³ + 1³.

The next major jump is enormous. The smallest number expressible as the sum of two positive cubes in three different ways is 87,539,319.

The sequence quickly moves from numbers that can be checked by hand to mathematical territory where computers become essential. That progression illustrates an important feature of number theory: apparently simple questions can become extraordinarily difficult as the numbers grow.

Ramanujan saw structure where others saw randomness  

The real fascination with 1729 lies in what the episode reveals about Ramanujan.

For Hardy, the number was merely the registration number of a taxi. For Ramanujan, it immediately suggested a hidden mathematical structure.

That ability to identify unexpected relationships between numbers became a defining feature of Ramanujan's mathematical legacy. His work ranged far beyond recreational number puzzles, covering infinite series, partitions, continued fractions and deep questions in number theory.

The 1729 episode therefore survives not because the number itself "changed mathematics" overnight, but because it offers a remarkably accessible glimpse into how Ramanujan thought.

The number has other mathematical identities  

1729 is not special only because of its cube representations. It is also a Carmichael number, a class of composite numbers that can behave like primes under certain modular arithmetic tests.

It can also be factored neatly as: 1729 = 7 × 13 × 19.

Its collection of unusual properties has kept mathematicians interested in the number long after the famous taxi ride.

The number has even found its way into popular culture, appearing as a mathematical Easter egg — another sign of how deeply the Hardy-Ramanujan story has entered the public imagination.
