After launching offline videos in 2014, YouTube has now introduced Smart Offline feature in India. This new feature will allow users to take advantage of cheaper data rates offered by mobile operators and save videos for offline viewing during night hours.
Smart Offline feature will work on the updated version of the YouTube app and works over carrier's data network. It will not work on WiFi network. Not much has been changed, to access this feature one has to select the 'save overnight' option which appears when you choose to go offline.
As this option will leverage the mobile operator's discounted night data plan, the YouTube app will smartly schedule the video to be saved for offline viewing after peak hours that night. The video can be accessed in 'saved video' tab.
Currently, YouTube has tied up with Airtel and Telenor for Smart Offline feature but the company hopes to bring it to all users in India.
