- Apple said to implement new design changes to fit a larger battery on the iPhone 13 series.
- The iPhone 12 series came with a lesser battery capacity than the iPhone 11 series.
- Analyst claims that iPhone 13 series could be heavier than the previous model.
The iPhone 13 series is expected to launch in the second half of 2021, following the standard yearly iPhone upgrade cycle. Every year, we expect some changes in the design and upgrades under the hood for the new iPhone series for 2021. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a reliable track record for predicting unannounced iPhone features, has released a new note for investors. Kuo claims that four new iPhone 13 models will come with bigger batteries.
The analyst mentions a new space-saving design that Apple is employing for the iPhone 13 series. The new design change will help the company fit a bigger size battery unit compared to the iPhone 12 series. In a report citing the latest note from Kuo, MacRumors says that the inclusion of larger batteries will mean that the iPhone 13 will be heavier than the iPhone 12 series. The note claims that Apple's space-saving design would integrate the SIM card slot with the mainboard. Apart from this, the company is also said to reduce the thickness of the display notch that houses the TueDepth sensor.
The iPhone 12 series in 2020, including - the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max - was primarily a yearly upgrade to the iPhone 11 series. However, one major hardware-related change that was revealed by a host of teardown videos posted on the Internet was around the battery. Compared to their predecessors, the iPhone 12 packed a 2815mAh battery while the iPhone 11 came with a 3110mAh battery, reducing 295mAh capacity. Similarly, the iPhone 12 Pro model came with a 2815mAh battery while the iPhone 11 Pro packed a 3046mAh battery - again, a reduction of 231mAh capacity on the newer version. The Max model also saw a slight decrease in the capacity where the iPhone 12 Pro Max came with a 3687mAh battery compared to the 3969mAh battery on the iPhone 11 Pro Max - a reduction of 282mAh capacity.
Specifications aside, many reviewers did point to battery woes on their new iPhone 12 series models compared to the iPhone 11 series. However, some of that battery drain was also because of added 5G support.
Kou's new note also talks about new display tech, which is expected to help Apple with extended battery life on the iPhone 13 series. The Pro models are likely to get the new ProMotion display with refresh rate support, finally a feature that has been rumoured for a long time. Many of these improvements are expected thanks to Apple's new A15 chip, which will be the brains behind the iPhone 13 series expected to launch in the second half.
Based on preliminary leaks, Apple is expected to reduce the display notch's size on the iPhone 13 series. The cameras are likely to see a boost again while there might be some minor connectivity enhancements on the new iPhone models.
