WhatsApp is reportedly testing a feature that would let users remove their message after a time period of 24 hours. The Facebook-owned messaging app had already rolled out the disappearing messages feature but that comes with a time frame of 7 days. However, now WhatsApp is testing the possibility of making the time period shorter. Apart from this, WhatsApp is also tweaking the archive feature.
Wabetainfo reported that WhatsApp is testing the ability to set messages to disappear after 24 hours. The messaging app was also testing self-destructing photos. If the feature is rolled out, users will be able to set the timer to 24 hours and get their message deleted after the said time period.
Apart from this, WhatsApp is making changes in the way the archive message feature functions. " WhatsApp is preparing an update that brings a new experience for your Archive: when you receive a message from archived chats, they won't be unarchived anymore. This is optional," the report read.
When WhatsApp started testing the feature, it had named it "vacation mode". The idea was scrapped and then resumed by WhatsApp with a new name Read Later. The feature has been renamed again and now it is back to what it was called "Archived Chats."
"This feature was called Vacation Mode the first time. It has been renamed to Read Later during the development and, as announced in the WhatsApp beta for Android 184.108.40.206 update, WhatsApp has renamed it to Archived Chats again. The feature is not available yet because it's under development, but WhatsApp is preparing some UI improvements for the Archived Chats cell, that will be visible only if you have any chats in your archive. If you have a chat in the archive, the cell will be always pinned to the top," the Wabetainfo read.
It is being reported that all notifications from Archived chats will be automatically muted. However, this is an optional feature and if you do not opt for it, you will get notifications the way you do now.
On a related note, WhatsApp recently rolled out a one-on-one video and voice calling feature on the desktop app. The feature lets users make calls using the desktop app. WhatsApp has not rolled out the group calling feature yet. This could be made available in future updates.
