10 years of UPI: Transaction value surges 4,000-fold to reach ₹314 lakh croreRecognised by the IMF as the world's largest real-time payment system by transaction volume, UPI processed nearly 49% of all global real-time payment transactions in 2025.

From processing a modest 90,000 transactions in its debut month to handling over 66 crore transactions daily, India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) completed 10 years of operation on August 25, 2026, marking a decade of transforming how the nation transacts.

Launched in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the regulatory oversight of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), UPI has transformed from a domestic payment tool into the backbone of India's digital payments ecosystem and a global benchmark for digital public infrastructure.

A Decade in Numbers

Over the past 10 years, UPI registered unprecedented scale, logging an almost 13,000-fold surge in transaction volume. Annual volume expanded from 1.78 crore transactions in FY2016-17 to over 24,162 crore transactions in FY2025-26, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 188%.

Parallelly, total transaction value witnessed a more than 4,000-fold rise, moving from ₹0.07 lakh crore in FY 2016-17 to around ₹314 lakh crore in FY2025-26 at a CAGR of 155%.

Record-Breaking 2026 & Institutional integration

The year 2026 set multiple operational milestones for the platform. Monthly transaction volumes crossed the 2,300-crore mark for the first time in May 2026 (reaching 2,320 crore), before hitting an all-time high of 2,366 crore transactions valued at ₹29.88 lakh crore in July 2026.

This surge has been bolstered by rapid institutional adoption. The network of live banks on UPI expanded from 44 in FY 2016-17 (and 21 at initial launch) to 703 banks by FY 2025-26, encompassing public, private, small finance, payment, and cooperative banks. Today, UPI commands an 84% share of India’s overall digital payments landscape.

Micro payments drive volume

An analysis of payment categories in FY 2025-26 reveals a distinct split between transaction volume and value:

  • Person-to-Merchant (P2M): Accounts for 63% of overall volume but only 29% of overall value, driven primarily by routine everyday retail. Small-ticket payments below ₹500 account for 86% of total P2M volume.
  • Person-to-Person (P2P): Dominates transaction value at 71%, despite representing 37% of volume. Low-value transfers below ₹500 account for 59% of P2P volume, while transactions above ₹500 make up the remaining 41%.

Beyond domestic borders, UPI has emerged as a platform for cross-border digital transactions and is currently operational across 11 countries: the United Arab Emirates, France, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece and Maldives.

Looking ahead, the Government of India reiterated its commitment to supporting UPI's next phase of growth through policy backing, tech advancements, and onboarding more users and merchants into the ecosystem.
