‘Since I arrived, I’ve only been paying bills’: Indian man in Japan spends nearly ₹1 lakh in 25 days

Moving to Japan can mean better salaries, but the cost of settling in can quickly add up. An Indian man living in the country recently calculated his expenses for his first 25 days and found that he had already spent around ₹90,271 on basic costs, without including food or daily groceries.

Dev Vijay Vargiya shared his expense breakdown on Instagram, saying his monthly salary had not yet arrived even though his budget in Japan had already been exceeded.

"After adding rent, electricity, gas, water, Wi-Fi, SIM, transportation and all the other basic expenses, my total expenses in Japan so far have come to around 150,000 yen (around ₹90,271), which is almost ₹1 lakh, in just 25 days," Vargiya said in the video.

‘I’ve already received my tenth bill’

Vargiya said he started calculating his expenses after finding yet another bill in his mailbox. He pointed out that he had not even completed a month in Japan but had already received his tenth bill.

"I literally haven't even completed one month in Japan, and I've already received my tenth bill. Since I arrived, I've only been paying bills," he said.

The ₹90,000-plus amount covered rent, electricity, gas, water, Wi-Fi, SIM, transportation and other basic expenses. It did not include food or groceries.

"And this is only for my house and basic expenses. I haven't even added my biggest expense yet: food and daily groceries, which is where I spend the most here," he said.

Milk, bread and groceries cost more

Vargiya also compared the prices of several everyday items in Japan with their approximate prices in India.

According to his comparison, a litre of milk costs ₹168 in Japan, compared with around ₹50 in India. Bread costs about ₹100, compared with ₹20 in India.

He also showed other grocery prices, including four eggs for ₹120, two onions for ₹150, one tomato for ₹53, a muskmelon for ₹350 and three bananas for ₹120.

The comparison showed how quickly everyday spending can increase when grocery costs are added to rent, utilities and transportation.

Higher expenses, but higher salaries too

Despite the high cost of living, Vargiya said the expenses should not be viewed in isolation. He pointed out that salaries in Japan are also much higher compared with India.

"We all know that the cost of living in Japan is very high. But salaries here are also much higher compared with India. I'm not just looking at the expenses," he said.

"I'm also looking at what we're getting in return for these expenses. A clean, well-maintained surrounding, peace everywhere, greenery, air quality, everything. What more could you ask for?" he added.
